In Mystic Seaport, Speight takes time to do some journaling in the early morning sunshine.

     
     Dan and Ethan, having been the first two to attain head rig clearance, snapped this photo of Gamage from the Mystic Seaport dock where they were ready to tie us off.

     Mystic Seaport gave us the opportunity to learn about the trades of a working seaport. We sang sea shanties, learned about blacksmithing, celestial navigation, and even rowed whale boats in the lovely afternoon sun.

     

     As we left Mystic, students really had time to become accustomed to life at sea, and the duties and responsibilities of being students and sailors. The weather has been dry and sunny so far, and it has accorded us many a lovely sunset and sunrise.

Mystic Seaport

      This morning students were awoken with an abandon ship drill. After a one-armed demonstration by Captain Flansburg, they raced their way into their immersion suits, and then the crew followed. Alex Sprague won the race and was treated to ice cream by his watch officer!

Caio Gloucester!

Dear Family and Friends,

It's time for us to leave Gloucester after four days in this beautiful and fascinating port. The people we have met here have been beyond memorable...

On Sunday we visited the Cape Ann Museum to see the work of Fitz Henry Lane. After being inspired by art work, we challenged ourselves to attempt to replicate his style in water color, included in our ongoing field journals.

The following day, we took a walk to Stage Fort Park, for a quick polar swim in the ocean (closest thing to a shower so far). The brave souls who took the plunge were Kelsey, Hazel, Liv, Olivia, Morgan, Kelsie, Bailey, Speight, Daniel, and David. 

 While at the Fisherman's Memorial, we came across a very nice man whose adorable puppy distracted us. His name was Nathaniel Mulcahy. After talking with him for a moment, we planned to meet him the next day at small piece of beach for him to teach us about sand dunes and barrier beaches. He was an extremely intelligent man, boasting six degrees, who gave an amazing insight to a small part of marine culture. We also invited him to breakfast on the Gamage this morning so he could see our artwork.

Hope everything is going well at home and at school, we're having a blast being off the grid for the term!

Lobsta' in Glousta'

     Today is our third day in Gloucester, and students have learned a great deal about local history and art while absorbing the picturesque harbor that surrounds the Harvey Gamage. Last night we watched Captains Courageous above deck and this morning local shipbuilder, Harold Burnham, showed the students how to build traditional lobster traps.

Portland, ME to Gloucester, MA

     En route from Portland to Gloucester, students are honing their seamanship skills. They are practicing their knots, learning to stand watch, neatly coil their lines, and finding time for homework.

     On Tuesday, students and crew welcomed parents aboard the Harvey Gamage to show off their home for the next several weeks. Afterwards, students bid their parents farewell and started to learn about life at sea.
