After a short stop at the Isles of Shoals marine lab and bird research station, we had a lovely passage east to Stave Harbor, where we had a much needed day devoted to academics and a bit of small boat sailing in Gecko. All are well, studying hard for finals and taking in the incomparable Maine coast.

We not only stocked up on fuel and provisions, but visited whale researchers at Ocean Alliance who are designing drones to fly into the blows of whales to collect valuable data to study whale stress. They call it a SnotBot. They're also working with the pop artist Pharrell Williams on a new line of jeans made out of recycled and reclaimed ocean plastics.
Finally, after two and a half months of intensive fishing (if you can call dragging a handline intensive…) we caught our first edible fish today. As we started to near the cooler waters north of Cape Hatteras we had begun to give up hope of enjoying the pleasure of fresh fish straight from the sea. Each morning we dutifully streamed our line off the taffrail, with the confidence that today would be the day and we would soon be eating the fresh fish sandwiches for which our cook Lizzie is famous for throughout the fleet. But every night at twilight we would reluctantly coil up the fishing line with resignation and, as the days wore on, despair.

Sure we've had some close calls; we've seen Dorados (Mahi Mahi as their known) leaping in the air around our lures, we've seen them lying in wait under fish floats, and we've even caught a few barracuda (which we threw back over concerns of ciguatera). Our wait for a delicious seafood meal would have to wait.

But today was different. The entire ship was woken up to the call of "Fish On!" yelled by our Chief Mate, Mr. Leathers. In no time he had a beautiful Bonito (a smaller cousin in the tuna family) over the rail amidst a very happy ship's company. Not wanting to waste any part of this opportunity, we reviewed some salient aspects of the fish's physiology, and looked in its stomach to see what we could learn about its diet. Shockingly we found about two dozen small larval crustaceans, larval fishes, and even a very small seahorse! Nothing was nearly as big as the lure that the fish had tried to eat.

The fish was lightly seared in olive oil and garlic, and proved an excellent accompaniment to the gnocchi we had for dinner. And best of all, we saved the skin and are currently experimenting to see if it is possible to make fish leather using black tea!
More rain this morning, so we walked three miles in our foulweather gear to Greenport, explored town, got schoolwork done, and worked on the ship. This afternoon brought sunshine, an almost forgotten sensation! Clothes and gear were brought out on deck to dry and had a swim call to freshen up for an early morning passage to Mystic. The Harvey Gamage, currently anchored in the safe harbor of Orient Point on the east end of Long Island, NY, is waiting out weather before heading up the river to Mystic, CT. After rounding a becalmed Cape Hatteras, students and crew experienced heavier wind and seas from the NE as we tried to beat to weather around Montauk Point, as well as pelting rain and cold temperatures. Waves constantly swept the deck but the entire crew's persistence and skill prevailed in the end. Though there are only 20 short nautical miles to Mystic, it will be nice to not fight the weather, if only for one night!
After spending a lot of time, and money, in Charleston, we've decided to forgo New York and head for the east end of Long Island and southern New England. This will allow us more time sailing in Maine before we disembark in Portland in a month's time.

As I got closer to investigate I could see the body of a bottlenose dolphin. Two women, marine biologists, were taking different tests such as temperature, and were photographing the beached mammal. After looking more closely at the dolphin, I could see lesions scattered on its body. The women told us that the lesions and the fact that the dolphin died on the beach were definite signs of Morbillivirus, though she couldn't tell us conclusively at the time without more extensive testing. This virus has killed over 1,100 dolphins up and down the east coast over the last year. This is the second epidemic, one in the '80's killing only 800 bottlenose dolphins.
Watching the women examine the creature was interesting and it
amazed me how quickly they did it. Finally seeing a bottlenose up close,
exposed from the water, was interesting, since I've only seen them play
in the wake of the Gamage's bow. Although it was sad to see such an
beautiful animal dead--a tear still clinging onto its face--I'm interested to learn more about the Morbillivirus and other diseases that
infect ocean animals.
This morning we visited the commercial port of Charleston, and saw how the containers that carry the goods we consume are shipped around the globe. We saw how different kinds of cargo, like cars or grain, require different kinds of ships and seaport facilities, and how technology has impacted maritime labor and seaport culture.
After the port visit, we traveled to Seabrook Island to visit the home of the Watsons, who have been overly generous to a bunch of grubby sailors! The cold front that brought many of you April snow showers is creating strong northeasterly winds off of Cape Hatteras, known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic," so the Captain has exercised due caution. While the old saying predicts that ships and sailors rot in port, there's definitely worse places to get stuck! We're exploring the sublime spring gardens at the Magnolia Plantation today...
After a two week passage consisting of 1588 nautical miles total, lots have been going on aboard the Harvey Gamage lately. But when you talk to your sailors during their precious, yet fleeting, phone time, it may be hard to understand all of what such a passage entails. You'll hear imprecise adjectives about the trip... great, wonderful, hard, long, tiring, awesome and the like. Hopefully this will help fill in some of those holes.

Sailing out of Santo Domingo, we beat to weather in light breezes, once again getting used to the sway of the ship and the open ocean after a long time ashore. We had a swim call over a section of the Puerto Rico Trench, 3800+ meters of blue water between our treading bodies and the ocean floor. We saw humpback whales on Silver Bank and a few days later a pod of pilot whales visited during a stunning sunset. And dolphins. Lots of dolphins! Our sailors are taking on more responsibility, navigating the ship and leading the watches themselves, and quite impressively so.

We saw green flashes--many of them, and at both sunset and sunrise. A number of students became "aloft cleared," and have been clamoring aloft for rig checks and the fantastic views. We found the gulf stream by checking surface temperature and salinity in what Scott has termed the "Benjamin Franklin Memorial Quest for the Gulf Stream," a wildly successful venture. The stream added up to 4 knots to our speed.
We've been keeping a record of all of the merchant ships we sight on watch, which have been numerous and challenging to our student navigators, to better understand the maritime world of today. We sailed 207 nautical miles over a 24 hour period, a rare feat for Gamage or any sailing vessel. We've celebrated birthdays and had a masquerade ball.
Not to say there weren't trying times as well. A stomach bug pestered the crew, as did seasickness and leaky decks after the wood shrank being so long in the heat of the Dominican Republic. But we've persevered together and have had a fantastic passage. We're so very looking forward to seeing family and friends so soon in Charleston!
There is
something about these long passages that brings out the artist in the sailor.
Between Santo Domingo and Fernandina Beach students and crew have created an
abundance of poetry, journal writing, and art. It has become commonplace to
crowd around the cabin top in the evening and paint the sky, noting changes in
color, cloud formation, and ocean hue.

On the main salon bulkhead poetry is
posted and shared. The Flying Fish that have come aboard have been rolled in
ink and printed on post cards and t-shirts. The abundance of talented artists
aboard has given rise to what we call the "Gamage School of Wildlife
Portraiture." The students' notebooks, field guides, and journals are
filled with the beautifully depicted flora and fauna of the ports we have
visited. The Asa Wright Bird Sanctuary in Trinidad, with its thirteen species
of hummingbirds, inspired many illustrations. Our artwork has become reflective
of our knowledge of sailing and the natural world around us, each reinforcing
the other. Below are some examples of

question. The topics chosen are as
diverse as our students themselves, and range from fuel efficiency of the
ship’s generator, to the abundance of bioluminescent plankton in the waters
around the ship. But don’t take my word
for it, I’ll let the students tell you all about it:

are found in agricultural runoff and sewage.
Nitrates have been known to cause large algal blooms that deplete
dissolved oxygen levels in certain areas of the ocean, killing large amounts of
marine life. This has become a major
problem in places such as the mouth of the Mississippi river where agricultural
runoff from the entire Mississippi watershed has created a large ‘dead

or not this has become an issue near other large rivers or cities.
Not only is it refreshing for the body in the sweltering heat, but it is refreshing on the mind and for the ship's dynamic. Nothing works to brighten the morale of the ship's company like a good old swim call in thousands of feet of clear Caribbean water!
Mayhem ensued, as eyes strained for the planet amidst the bright sunlight in the hopes of getting a sextant sight and a daylight celestial fix. While Scott had Venus momentarily brought down to the horizon, the elusive daylight planetary sight eluded us... until next time!
We've all been busy with mid-terms, exploring the oldest city in the Western Hemisphere, and preparing for our service project adventure.

With a very fast passage leaving Trinidad, we were able to make a quick stop in Vieques, Puerto Rico before making landfall in Santo Domingo, DR, a successful week-long passage of nearly 800 nm using solely traditional means of navigation. Our GPS intentionally turned off by the captain, we relied on navigational fixes using the sun & stars and "dead reckoning," which calculates our progress using our course steered and speed to track our own progress. Our students, now well versed in the ship, are learning more advanced skills like celestial navigation by calculating our latitude by measuring the angle of the sun's apex--or our local apparent noon.

Here in the DR, we'll be working with a local school and orphanage that aims to help poor, mostly immigrant youth of Haitian decent. These kids often have no nationality status, and little prospect. In learning about the long, fractured history of Haitian & Dominican relations, we'll hopefully better understand how national policy and long-held perspectives on race affect these kids. We'll post more photos and student work in the next few days, so stay tuned!

And apologies for the slideshow that stopped working... you can still access all of our photos from the link at the top of the page under the banner, and we've replaced the small slideshow with a better, Flickr-supported one that is expandable within the blog.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
